About me

My approach

The driving force behind Psychy is psychologist drs. Mae Tol (they/them). Below you’ll find more information regarding my education and experience.

Unlike contracted mental healthcare, I work without contracts with health insurance companies. I don’t make diagnoses, meaning you have complete privacy, and everything you tell me remains in strict confidence; a shared medical record is not kept. You do not need a reference letter from your GP to get started.

I am a licensed psychologist and a member of the professional association for psychologists in the Netherlands, the NIP. To ensure quality, I participate in monthly supervision sessions.

Mae Tol is a member of the Dutch Institute of Psychologists (Nederlands Instituut van Psychologen; NIP).

All my life I’ve been incredibly fascinated by the way people act and are. How do we work exactly? What influences us? They are complex questions that keep interesting me. Within psychology, I find looking for the answers to these questions much more interesting than the ‘labeling’ of human behaviour.

I am convinced that our brains respond to the situations we found ourselves in with the intent of solving it. Something that is now bothersome or unworkable behaviour, was at one point probably a coping mechanism meant to protect you in a certain situation. Considering the current state of our world, I am not at all surprised that so many people find themselves having difficult questions. As far as I’m concerned, it is of little use to tell all those people that they show ‘abnormal’ behaviour – I think it is a natural response to the problems we encounter in our daily lives.

In my therapy the focus lies on finding ways to become more resilient, knowing how not to get carried away with your thoughts and feelings, and learning to focus your attention on the things in life you find truly important.
